Our Mission
Women's Medical Fund provides direct financial assistance and other support to low-income women and girls in Southeastern Pennsylvania who wish to terminate a pregnancy but cannot afford a safe, legal abortion.
In addition to supplying direct aid to low-income women, WMF educates health care professionals about the use of Medicaid to fund abortion, and raises public awareness of the devastating impact of denying access to safe legal abortions.
The Need
In 1985, Pennsylvania cut off Medicaid funding for abortions. Estimates show that 20-35% of poor women and girls are forced to carry unwanted pregnancies to term because they cannot pay for a safe, legal abortion. The Women's Medical Fund was founded in 1985 to provide women and girls with the options that come with financial means. It can be hard to imagine that $50 is the difference between being able to choose whether or not to continue a pregnancy, but that is the reality for some in our community.
The Impact
Since 1985, the Women's Medical Fund has enabled over 17,000 women and teens in the Philadelphia area to exercise their right to choose a safe legal abortion. Nationally, reproductive justice leaders work tirelessly to ensure that our legal rights remain intact. But rights without access are meaningless. WMF has worked locally for 28 years to transform those rights into reality.
The Future
WMF is funded primarily through individual donations along with some progressive foundations and organizations. Our work does not attract corporate support and is ineligible for government support. WMF relies upon the generosity of those who understand that we cannot ignore the needs of women affected by the unjust and inequitable prohibition of Medicaid funding for abortion.
WMF will continue to raise funds in order to provide live-saving financial support to those who have difficulty paying for a safe, legal abortion.
